Winter is just around the corner, and many of us who live in areas of the country that experience all 4 seasons have to accept the reality that snow & ice are a way of life for 1/3rd of the year. Snow can be plowed and moved, but ice is where the real danger lies – both in our cars and on our feet.
To combat this, there are several ice-melting products available that help keep us safe and going on about our lives. The two most common products are rock salt and calcium chloride, both with very different chemical properties. Here at Nationwide Industrial Supply, we carry a third option, an “Industrial Blend” which is a mix of the two.
Rock Salt: Standard Morton Safe-T-Salt is your run-of-the-mill ice melting product, which is comprised of sodium chloride. It melts down to 5°F and is the most economical choice when choosing an ice melter. They come in 50lb bags and our part number is IM01.
Industrial Blend: This is an exclusive product that we carry here at Nationwide. It is a mix of sodium chloride (rock salt), magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride. It melts down to -15°F and is very recognizable by its distinct green color. They come in 50lb bags and our part number is IM10.
Calcium Chloride: If you’re looking to quickly melt ice when it’s very cold outside, you’ll want to go with the Peladow calcium chloride. It is odorless/colorless, safe for concrete/blacktop, and will melt ice down to -25°F! It comes in 50lb bags and our part number is IM05. Calcium chloride is also available in liquid form for de-icing large areas.
